CLINICAL RESEARCH

What is Clinical Research or who is a Clinical Researcher?

Clinical research is the scientific study of the effectiveness, safety, and benefits of medical treatments, devices, drugs, or interventions in human subjects.
Clinical researchers are professionals who design, conduct and manage clinical trials and studies to generate data and evidence for developing new treatments, improving existing therapies, and advancing medical knowledge.

Role or Duties of a Clinical Researcher

a. Study Design and Protocol Development: Clinical researchers are involved in designing research studies and developing protocols that outline the objectives, methodology, and ethical considerations. They determine the study design, sample size, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and data collection methods.

b. Participant Recruitment and Informed Consent: Clinical researchers play a crucial role in recruiting suitable participants for clinical trials. They explain the study details to potential participants, obtain informed consent, and ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and regulations.

c. Data Collection and Management: Clinical researchers collect and manage data related to the clinical trial or study. They may use electronic data capture systems or paper-based forms to record participant information, treatment administration, adverse events, and other relevant data.

d. Monitoring and Quality Assurance: Clinical researchers oversee the monitoring of clinical trial sites to ensure adherence to protocols, regulatory requirements, and good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines. They conduct site visits, review data quality, and address any issues or deviations.

e. Data Analysis and Reporting: Clinical researchers analyze collected data using statistical methods to evaluate treatment outcomes, efficacy, safety, and adverse events. They generate study reports, manuscripts, and presentations summarizing the findings for scientific and regulatory purposes.

f. Regulatory Compliance: Clinical researchers ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and guidelines set by regulatory authorities such as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), and ethical review boards. They submit study protocols, obtain necessary approvals, and maintain regulatory documentation.

g. Collaboration and Team Management: Clinical researchers often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including physicians, scientists, statisticians, and regulatory experts. They coordinate and manage research activities, ensuring effective communication and adherence to timelines.

h. Safety Monitoring: Clinical researchers monitor participant safety throughout the clinical trial or study. They promptly report and evaluate adverse events, assess risks, and implement appropriate measures to ensure participant well-being.

i. Ethical Considerations: Clinical researchers adhere to ethical principles and guidelines, ensuring participant confidentiality, privacy, and informed consent. They prioritize the welfare and rights of study participants.

j. Continuing Education and Professional Development: Clinical researchers stay updated on advancements in clinical research methodologies, regulations, and ethical standards. They participate in workshops, conferences, and training programs to enhance their skills and knowledge.

The role and responsibilities of a clinical researcher may vary depending on the specific position, organization, and phase of clinical research.

How to make a career in Clinical Research?
  • Step 1:   In Class 12, opt for the Science stream with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
  • Step 2 :  After completing Class 12, enroll in a bachelor's degree program in a field related to life sciences, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, or a related discipline. Some relevant courses include:
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, or Nursing
  • Step 3:  Consider pursuing a postgraduate degree or diploma in clinical research or a related field. Although not mandatory, higher education can enhance your knowledge and career prospects in the field.
